Ambiance & Atmosphere

by Cheryl Elsbree

The experience of a space is what causes interior design leave an impression.  Atmosphere and ambiance ties a space together and leaves the guest with a special memory.  A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit the lovely Oxford Exchange in Tampa, FL which acts as part restaurant, part boutique, part design office, and part coffee/tea lounge.  Not only did they have wonderful coffee selections paired with sweet treats, but the lounge space took me back in time with its worn leather sofas, dark stained wood, parquet floor, and unfinished brick everywhere.  It's all in the details!

I was instantly wrapped up in the completeness of everything I saw because it came together seamlessly and nothing was left untouched or forgotten.  Above is a picture of the fabulous hall leading to the coffee service area and I have never had a more pleasurable experience walking down a hall before.  The way the wood parquet was laid drew you into the space and the peek of skylights above brought natural light in unexpectedly.  Same with the coffered barrel ceiling and sumptuous dark paneled walls were touches that enhanced the moment of walking from one space to another.

Can't say enough about the outdoor dining space.  This image doesn't show it all but to the right was a fountain and just bringing in that water element balanced and gave a focal point to the space.  The effect of nature in a space is soothing to anybody and the combination of greenery, water, and natural daylight flooding in made this a moment to remember.

You have accomplished your job as a designer if you not only protect the health, safety, and welfare of the users, but inspire guests with moments of surprise and wonder.  Combining lighting, materials, conversational seating arrangements, and attention to details makes for an absolute and complete moment that will leave lasting warm memories for long after.
